Traditional Background

Comfrey has been treasured for centuries in European folk medicine and is commonly known as “knitbone” due to its traditional use on bruises, sprains and other minor musculoskeletal complaints. Herbalists historically used the leaf and root externally to support the body’s natural healing processes in bones, joints, muscles and skin.

Active Constituents

Allantoin: A key compound in Comfrey that is associated with skin regeneration and tissue repair. It is one reason Comfrey has been used topically on minor wounds, bruises and similar issues.

Mucilage: Soothing, gel-like polysaccharides that can help calm and protect irritated tissue, especially when used externally.

Tannins and rosmarinic acid: These compounds contribute to Comfrey’s astringent and comforting properties, supporting tissue tone and a healthy inflammatory response.

Pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs): Naturally occurring alkaloids present in Comfrey have been linked to potential liver and vascular toxicity when taken internally in high doses or for extended periods. This is why many modern guidelines recommend limiting or avoiding internal use.

Traditional Uses

Traditional herbal practice has used Comfrey leaf primarily:

  • Externally on bruises, sprains and minor strains
  • To support the body’s natural bone and joint repair processes
  • For chafed, irritated or dry skin
  • As a poultice, cream or ointment for local comfort

Some traditions also used Comfrey internally in the past, but modern safety recommendations are much more cautious due to the presence of PAs.

Properties

Vulnerary (supports tissue repair – especially externally), demulcent (soothing), astringent, traditionally used bone and joint support herb.

Key Traditional Applications

Comfrey leaf has been traditionally used to support:

  • Minor sprains, strains and bruises (external)
  • Muscle and joint comfort (external)
  • Skin comfort and hydration
  • Healthy appearance of scars and marks (external)

Important Notes

Due to its pyrrolizidine alkaloid content, many modern guidelines recommend that Comfrey be used primarily for external applications and that internal use be avoided or carefully supervised by a qualified herbal practitioner.

Comfrey is generally not recommended during pregnancy, breastfeeding, or for individuals with known liver issues. Avoid applying to deep or infected wounds unless guided by a professional.
