Traditional Uses
Lymphatic Detoxification:
Cleavers is one of the most effective herbs for cleansing and supporting the lymphatic system. By stimulating lymph flow and toxin removal, it helps counter chronic inflammatory conditions such as acne, eczema, and arthritis. It is often used in detox formulations to clear waste from tissues and reduce fluid stagnation. Cleavers should not be used during pregnancy, as the release of stored toxins into circulation could potentially impact a developing fetus.
Vascular & Circulatory Support:
Cleavers may enhance blood vessel function and assist in maintaining healthy blood pressure. The plant contains asperuloside, a glycoside that converts in the body to hormone-like prostaglandins — compounds responsible for smooth muscle relaxation, vessel dilation, and circulation regulation. Topical applications of cleavers have been traditionally used to soothe bruises, hemorrhoids, and varicose veins.
Urinary System Health:
Although not a strong diuretic, cleavers gently increases kidney filtration and toxin elimination. It is commonly combined with complementary herbs such as marshmallow root or Queen Anne’s lace to help prevent urinary stones and support overall urinary tract health. Cleavers may relieve mild urinary tract infections and prostate inflammation due to its natural antimicrobial and antiviral constituents, including gallic acid.
Bone Strength & Mineralization:
Cleavers contains p-hydroxycinnamic acid, a compound shown to support bone health by promoting calcium deposition and reducing bone resorption. This may help prevent bone loss and strengthen skeletal structure when used alongside a mineral-rich diet.
