Celandine (Greater Celandine)

🌿Ingredients: Greater Celandine (Chelidonium majus) aerial parts.
💊Capsule: HPMC plant fibre (vegetarian). 🌱Use only as directed and preferably under the guidance of a qualified practitioner.

Traditional Background

Greater Celandine has a long history of use in European herbal traditions, especially as a liver and bile-supportive herb and for topical application to stubborn skin blemishes. It contains a bright yellow-orange latex and potent plant alkaloids, so it has traditionally been used in small amounts and with care.

Active Constituents

Isoquinoline Alkaloids: Including chelidonine, sanguinarine and related compounds that underpin many of Celandine’s traditional actions on the liver, gallbladder and smooth muscle.

Bitter Principles: Stimulate digestive secretions, bile flow and appetite in traditional herbal practice.

Flavonoids & Other Phytochemicals: Provide additional antioxidant and tissue-supportive effects.

Traditional Uses

Liver & Gallbladder Support: Celandine has been classically used as a “cholagogue” – a herb that encourages bile production and flow – to support digestion of fats and general liver function.

Digestive Comfort: As a bitter, Celandine has been used to support appetite, relieve feelings of fullness and support comfortable digestion after rich or heavy meals.

Topical Use in Traditional Practice: The latex has historically been applied (with care) to stubborn skin blemishes like warts and corns in folk herbalism.

Properties

Traditionally regarded as: hepatic (liver-supportive), cholagogue (supports bile flow), bitter tonic, antispasmodic (for smooth muscle), slightly sedative, and cleansing when used appropriately.

Key Traditional Applications

Historically used by herbalists to support:

  • Liver and gallbladder function
  • Bile flow and digestion of fats
  • Appetite and digestive comfort
  • Short-term cleansing protocols
  • Traditional topical applications for stubborn skin blemishes

Important Notes

Celandine is a strong herb and should be used with respect. Internal use is traditionally short-term and in small amounts, preferably under the guidance of an experienced practitioner. It is generally not recommended for use during pregnancy, breastfeeding or in those with pre-existing liver disease.

Stop use immediately and seek medical advice if you notice jaundice (yellowing of the skin/eyes), dark urine, unusual fatigue, or any other concerning symptoms.
