Bi Carb
Sodium Bicarbonate
Bicarbonate of Soda / Baking Soda
- Occasional acid discomfort or indigestion
- Short-term digestive support
- Traditional household and topical uses
- Baths, pastes, and external soothing applications
Traditional Background
Sodium bicarbonate is a naturally occurring alkaline compound widely known as baking soda. It has long been used in household, food, and traditional wellness settings for its neutralising and cleansing properties.
Traditionally, it has been used internally for short-term relief of occasional digestive acidity, and externally in baths or pastes to soothe minor skin discomforts.
Traditional Uses
Digestive Comfort:
Sodium bicarbonate has traditionally been used as a simple antacid to help neutralise excess stomach acid and provide short-term relief from occasional heartburn, acid discomfort, and indigestion.
Acid–Alkaline Balance:
In natural health traditions, sodium bicarbonate is sometimes used in small amounts as part of broader dietary approaches aimed at supporting a balanced internal environment. It is generally viewed as a short-term aid rather than a daily tonic.
Topical Use:
Externally, baking soda is often added to baths or made into a paste with water to soothe minor skin irritations, itching, prickly heat, and insect bites.
Household Use:
Bicarbonate of soda is also traditionally valued as a natural deodoriser and cleaning agent, including for laundry and personal care applications.
Properties
Alkalising • Antacid • Deodorising • Cleansing • Mildly soothing for topical use
How It Works
When sodium bicarbonate mixes with stomach acid, it reacts to form salt, water, and carbon dioxide. This neutralising action is what gives rise to its traditional use as an antacid. The release of carbon dioxide may cause burping after use.
Additional Traditional Uses
- Occasional digestive acidity and heartburn
- Baths for minor skin irritation
- Pastes for insect bites or stings
- Natural deodorising and household cleansing
Important Notes
Sodium bicarbonate should be used with care, especially by those on sodium-restricted diets, with high blood pressure, kidney conditions, or those taking regular medication.
Frequent or high-dose use is not recommended unless under professional guidance. It may interact with medications or affect stomach acidity needed for digestion.
For topical use, avoid broken skin and discontinue if irritation occurs.
