What is Angelica?

Angelica archangelica is a tall, aromatic herb native to Europe and parts of Asia. Known for its sweet, earthy fragrance and delicate green umbels, it has long been valued in traditional European herbal medicine as a warming digestive and circulatory tonic.

All parts of the plant — particularly the root and seed — contain volatile oils, bitters, and coumarins that give angelica its distinctive aroma and therapeutic activity.

Traditional Uses

Angelica has been used for centuries as a stomachic, carminative, and nervine. Herbalists have traditionally prescribed it to:

  • Stimulate digestive secretions and ease bloating or flatulence

  • Improve circulation and joint stiffness, particularly in cold or damp conditions

  • Soothe nervous tension, mild anxiety, and assist with insomnia

  • Support respiratory health, especially for colds and a runny nose

  • Help with loss of appetite or sluggish digestion following illness

In European folk medicine, it was also regarded as a protective herb — its Latin name, archangelica, referring to the Archangel Michael, symbolising strength and purification.

Key Benefits

1. Digestive Support

Angelica root contains bitter compounds and essential oils that stimulate saliva and digestive juices, supporting appetite and easing discomfort such as gas, cramping, and heartburn.

It is often used in digestive bitters and herbal tonics to:

  • Promote smoother digestion

  • Relieve post-meal bloating

  • Support liver and gallbladder function

2. Circulatory & Joint Health

As a mild circulatory stimulant, angelica helps improve blood flow to the extremities.
This warming property can ease joint stiffness, arthritis, and cold hands and feet, especially in sluggish or damp constitutions.

3. Nervous System & Sleep Support

Angelica acts as a mild nervine, helping to calm an overactive nervous system.
It may support:

  • Tension-related headaches

  • Nervous restlessness

  • Difficulty sleeping due to anxiety

Taken as a warm tea before bed, angelica can gently encourage relaxation and restorative sleep.

4. Respiratory & Sinus Relief

The aromatic oils in angelica act as gentle expectorants and decongestants, helping to:

  • Clear a runny or stuffy nose

  • Ease mild respiratory irritation from colds or allergies

Cautions

  • Avoid during pregnancy (can stimulate uterine contractions).

  • Do not use if you are photosensitive or exposed to prolonged sunlight, as angelica may increase sensitivity to UV light.

  • Use cautiously if taking blood thinners, as it may enhance their effects.

  • Not recommended for those with peptic ulcers or reflux made worse by bitters.
